A concerted effort is being made in the Baltimore region to deal with travel and its implications on personal mobility, traffic congestion, job accessibility, economic development, parking shortages, air quality and energy consumption. To assist this effort, information has been collected on the characteristics of the region's travel. In summary, travel in the region is currently: Peaked (60% of commuter work trips are made during short rush hours); Auto dependent (88% of peak trips are in automobiles); Work trip dominated; Dominated by long trips (80% of commuter traffic on trips longer than 10 miles one way); Made in low occupancy vehicles; and Diffused.
