When a ship enters or leaves a navigation lock the speed and the vertical position of the ship will be adjusted accordingly. In addition, waves are generated and the return flow velocity around the ship changes. In the paper the mathematical model WAROS is presented which computes the vertical motions of ships that sail into or out of locks, and also the related water motions. The situations which are studied pertain to the entering into or the leaving from a lock with a closed end, and the passage of a ship through an open lock.
