The report gives an overview of the development of the airliner structure, engines and systems, and the impact on the cockpit design. The influence of the developments of micro-electronics, digital computer technology and display technology on the avionics design and cockpit layout of the recently introduced airliners as the Airbus A-310 is discussed. Finally an extrapolation with respect to the design of the flight deck of future airliners is given, based on existing developments in the area of microwave landing systems, satellite navigation systems, all-electric aircraft technology, control configured vehicle technology, data-link technology and advanced Air Traffic Control.
