This report presents the results of a NCHRP Report 350 type 4-12 crash test conducted on a sidewalk-mounted steel bridge railing designed by the New England Transportation Consortium (NETC). The test utilized a 8108 kg (gross weight including ballast) single-unit van truck impacting at 80 km/h and a 15 deg angle to evaluate the strength of the barrier section to contain and redirect the heavy vehicle. The performance of the barrier was judged to pass most of the evaluation criteria of NCHRP Report 350; however, the entire front axle of the vehicle was dislodged by the impact, and its post-impact trajectory would have made it a hazard for adjacent traffic lanes. Barrier damage was limited to deflection of two rail sections and two posts.
