This study reports the results of a statewide survey of restraint use by 4-8 year old children in Michigan conducted between July 13 and 29, 2004. In this study, 3,420 4-8 year old children were observed traveling in passenger cars, vans/minivans, sport- utility vehicles, and pickup trucks. Restraint use was estimated for children traveling in all vehicles combined, as well as for each vehicle type separately. Children's restraint use was also calculated by the sex, age, and belt use of the driver. Separate estimates were also made of the restraint use of 4-8 year old children by the combination of sex and belt use of the driver.
