Recent development of ultrashort laser pulses has enabled researchers to investigate dynamics of phonon and electron systems in solids. Typical pump-probe technique using fs laser pulses can generate and detect coherent oscillations of the electron and phonon systems. So far, the coherent phonons have been observed by this time domain spectroscopy in a large number of materials, such, as semiconductors, semimetals, high Tc superconductors, dielectrics, molecular crystals. Coherent plasmons have also been observed in highly excited semiconductors. We will represent the results on the coherent oscillations of phonons and carriers in bulk semiconductors and semimetals, especially in materials with superlattice structures.
