This is a comprehensive report describing the use of hydraulic models to assist in the solution of complex coastal engineering problems. This report provides information for use ·by both the laboratory research engineer and the field design engineer on the capabilities and limitations of coastal hydraulic modeling procedures. The report is intended to provide sufficient information to document the state-of-the-art of scale modeling practiced by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES); and for field design engineers and other laboratory research engineers to better understand the principles of scale models and the application of these principles in the design, construction, and operation of scale hydraulic models in the solution of problems involving the interaction of waves, tides, currents, and related sediment movements in estuaries, coastal harbors, coastal erosion, and stability of coastal structures and inlets.
