An emulator 30 configured to emulate an automated aircraft assembly jig supporting an aircraft assembly, the emulator connectable to an automated equipment module 20 (which may be a robot, conveyor, lifter or manipulator) and configured to: send a first signal 60 to an automated equipment module, wherein the first signal is representative of a communication to the automated equipment module; and receive a second signal 70 from the automated equipment module representative of a communication from the automated equipment module, wherein the automated equipment module is arranged to operate autonomously on an aircraft assembly. The first signal may indicate that the automated equipment module is connected to the emulator. The second signal may indicate that the emulator is connected to the automated equipment module. The automated equipment module may perform an action based on the first signal and the second signal may indicate that the action has been performed.
