The method includes receiving signals are from a plurality of sources 42a-k, 32e-f, such as RADAR, LIDAR, cameras, telematics or GPS systems, representing aspects of the vehicle and its environment. An autonomous confidence factor is developed based on component confidence levels for at least one of the signals. Control of the vehicle is transitioned between levels of autonomy based at least in part on the autonomous confidence factor. The autonomous confidence factor is a measure of the quality of the data that the system is generating and the individual components or sub-systems may have their own specific confidence levels. The component confidence factor may be weighted D1-9 depending on how reliable the data from that sub-system is. Fuzzy logic may be applied to the component confidence levels prior to the autonomous confidence factor being calculated.
