A vehicle door 20 having a handle 26 that provides improved user convenience. The handle is accessible from either side of the door. At least a portion of the handle extends beyond the end of the door. The handle includes means for detecting the force applied by a user to the handle. A first resistance to rotation of the door is provided when no force is applied by the user to the handle. A second resistance to rotation of the door is provided when a force is applied by the user to the handle, with said second resistance being lower than first resistance. The handle may have a neutral position and can be moved away from said neutral position in two directions. The handle detects a force applied by the user when the handle is displaced away from its neutral position.
