Discharge circuit (8) for discharging a smoothing capacitor (5) of an electric power converter (1), comprising two terminals (12) being connectable or connected to the smoothing capacitor (5), a discharging unit (14) connected in parallel to the terminals (12) and configured to pull a current flowing between the terminals (12), wherein the discharge circuit (8) comprises a control unit (21) configured to compare a first value representative of a voltage dropping over the terminals (12) when the discharging unit (14) pulls the current with a second value representative of the voltage being timely delayed and to continue discharging the smoothing capacitor (5) with a higher current than the pulled current depending on a result of the comparison.
