The invention relates to a vehicle guidance system for operating a vehicle in an automated driving mode, in which the vehicle is automatically guided in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction. The vehicle guidance system is configured to detect manual intervention of a driver of the vehicle in longitudinal and/or lateral guidance of the vehicle when the vehicle is operated in an automated driving mode. Furthermore, the vehicle guidance system is arranged to output a cue to a driver of the vehicle via a user interface of the vehicle in order to urge the driver of the vehicle to take over longitudinal and/or lateral guidance of the vehicle. The vehicle guidance system is further configured to continue at least part of the automated longitudinal and/or transverse guidance of the vehicle for the take-over time period and/or the take-over road section.
