A method includes determining a location of a vehicle, accessing a database including crime-related data, and specifying a risk level for the location of the vehicle if the database includes crime-related data associated with the determined location of the vehicle. The method includes determining a parked state of the vehicle, the parked state being one of parked, being parked, about to be parked, or being driven. In the event that the parked state of the vehicle is one of parked, being parked, or about to be parked and the specified risk level is above a risk threshold, the method includes triggering a vehicle safety mechanism.
