The invention provides a driving system and a driving method of a hybrid electric vehicle. The driving system comprises an engine, a one-way clutch, a motor, a clutch, a brake, a transmission and a planetary gear train; the engine is connected with a sung gear; the inner ring of the one-way clutch is connected with the sun gear; the brake is connected with the sun gear; a planet carrier is connected with the transmission; one end of the clutch is connected with the planet carrier, while the other end of the clutch is connected with a gear ring; the rotor of the motor is connected to the gear ring; a stator is fixed on a housing. According to the driving system of the hybrid electric vehicle, a power coupling device composed of the planetary gear train, the motor, the brake, the one-way clutch and the clutch is connected with the engine and the transmission, and the working conditions of the clutch and the brake are controlled to enable the hybrid electric vehicle to operate in a plurality of power driven working modes, and therefore, the power arrangement problem of a front-drive front-engine hybrid electric vehicle is solved, the various performance requirements of the whole vehicle can be met and the engine can be started steadily in the running process; the driving system has the advantages of high efficiency, low cost, small size, good power performance and the like.
