An exterior aircraft light unit (2) according to exemplary embodiments of the invention comprises: a housing (4) including a mounting portion (6), which is configured for mounting the aircraft light unit (2) to an aircraft; at least one light source (10); and a heat sink (16, 20); wherein the heat sink (16, 20) comprises: a first heat sink portion (16) comprising a plurality of cooling ribs (18) being thermally connected with the at least one light source (10) for transferring heat from the at least one light source (10) to the plurality of cooling ribs (18); and at least one second heat sink portion (20) comprising two heat sink plates (22) and a clamping pin (32) and being configured such that the second heat sink portion (20) is selectively attachable, particularly clampable, to a respective cooling rib (18) of the first heat sink portion (16).
