A hydraulic actuator comprises: a hydraulic cylinder 2; a piston 5 within the hydraulic cylinder 2 and movable in response to movement of hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic circuit coupled to the hydraulic cylinder 2; a synchronisation connection 14 for receiving an input from a simultaneous transmission line 14; and a valve 3 for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic circuit. The valve 3 is a rotary valve 3 comprising: a first valve section 16 arranged to rotate in either a first rotational direction or a second rotational direction in response to input from the simultaneous transmission line 14 in order to open a hydraulic flow path to the cylinder 2 and urge the piston 5 to move along the hydraulic cylinder 2 in a corresponding first linear direction or second linear direction; and a second valve section 18 arranged to rotate in either the first rotational direction or the second rotational direction; wherein the second valve section 18 is coupled to the piston 5 such that movement of the piston 5 results in movement of the second valve section 18 to follow the first valve section 16 and to close the hydraulic flow path when the rotation of the first valve section 16 is stopped.
