Abstract The concept of temperature as it applies to the solar photosphere is discussed. Spectroscopic diagnostics such as C I 5380Å and Fe I 5379Å are evaluated using model atmosphere calculations. New evidence is presented for a secular change now being under way in the deep photosphere temperature gradient.
