In gas-discharge lasers judicious combination of inelastic electron-atom and atom-atom collisions for excitation and relaxation can maintain population inversion in appropriate atoms; collisions with other atoms can selectively relax lower level to other nearby levels without reducing upper level population; in favorable cases, laser power of order of 1 w/cm3 with efficiency greater than 10% is expected; temperatures above 1000° are needed to produce monatomic gas of most elements with suitably spaced low-lying levels; apparatus for testing these systems was constructed and xenon test oscillations were observed.
