Radioisotope engines producing tens of kilowatts of shaft power appear to be practical; one of most interesting applications of such engine is propulsion of small (15 to 150 ton) submersible vehicles; reciprocating Rankine steam cycle was selected for power conversion in study of radioisotope engine as best compromise between simplicity and good efficiency; operational characteristics of this system are described.
