Flight at speeds greater than that of sound presents problems to aircraft designer and engineer; for designer, one of most serious difficulties is that aircraft built to fly at supersonic speeds at high altitudes becomes unmanageable at low altitudes and at much lower speeds necessary for landing and taking off; for engineer, major problem is provision of compact power unit capable of generating great power necessary to overcome high drag experienced at these speeds.
