Individual vehicle travel time is the premise of travel time in traffic flow, which is the basis of travel time prediction and route guidance. Aiming at the shortcomings of current methods, a method based on the piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation polynomial is used to estimate travel time of an individual vehicle. Data obtained from field experiments according to different traffic states (free-flow, transition, and congestion) is used to verify the model. The results show that accuracy of the piecewise cubic Hermite interpolation polynomial method is better than that of the piecewise linear interpolation method and the piecewise cubic spline interpolation method. The proposed method can better simulate the complex running state of a vehicle and produce more accurate travel time estimation for individual vehicles.
