The range of UAS sizes and types now being developed runs from air vehicles (AVs) small enough to land on the palm of your hand to aircraft as large as a small airliner. Missions range from taking a look over the next hill or inside a building with a UAV that can land on the palm of one's hand through searching and watching over large areas to lingering at high altitude over a point on the earth and performing mission typical of a satellite in earth orbit. Examples of UAVs that have so far been developed and fielded range from AVs the size of a Frisbee to aircraft with wingspans of 30 to 40 meters.
