The energy management strategy (also called power control strategy) in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) plays an important role in the improvement of the fuel economy and reduction of emissions. This chapter discusses practical and advanced energy management strategies of an HEV. The first section describes a general rule‐based energy management strategy. The second section presents the implementation of a fuzzy logic‐based HEV energy management strategy. A dynamic programming approach and implementation are proposed in the third section. The fourth section introduces a two‐step optimization method determining the optimal operating points for an HEV based on engine mapping data and the power requirements of practical drive cycles. It also explains how to take the constraints of power requirement and battery life into account in a practical hybrid vehicle system design. The fifth section introduces a driving situation awareness‐based energy management strategy, which is incorporated with driving cycle/style pattern recognition algorithms.
