The technological discontinuity that attracts the attention of new entrants is the advent of small satellites. The emergence of small satellites leads existing firms to have to determine whether this discontinuous innovation is a substitute that would threaten the traditional large satellites they have been selling for many years. This chapter shows that small satellites are potential disruptive innovations, but do not pose a significant threat to existing firms that manufacture large traditional satellites. It proposes an original model to help existing firms improve their external strategic diagnosis. Existing firms often fail to properly diagnose the disruptive technology and the new market segment. A potential disruptive innovation exhibits, in the criteria valued by the mainstream customers, a lower performance than existing products. The diffusion of potential disruptive innovations implies the existence of complementary products that will increase the value of innovations for customers.
