The problem in identifying the business case for Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is that it is proffered as a means to ‘optimise’ a journey. If is that simple, the business opportunity is to provide and operate the MaaS broker service, and everyone will be a winner. The benefit of MaaS to the traveller will in these circumstances often be low unless the driving conditions are particularly bad, and even then, the advent of automated vehicles (AVs) will make difficult driving conditions more tolerable. In all probability, if AVs are available as cheaply as is being suggested, the availability of an AV will lead travellers away from MaaS, rather than direct them towards it. MaaS will have its place, but it will primarily be in larger cities.
