This chapter reviews the origins of the National intelligent transportation systems (ITS) architecture in the United States, the basis of its definition, the impact it has had on ITS development in the United States at the federal, state and local levels as well as on major ITS initiatives, and the environment it creates to afford evolution as ITS and Connected Vehicle technologies mature. To stakeholders and users of the National ITS architecture, the service packages provide access to the pieces of the architecture that meet their needs. The National ITS Architecture content is made available to stakeholders through various tools including National ITS architecture Website and Turbo Architecture. Turbo Architecture affords references to state, regional, and local transportation planning objectives providing the resulting ITS architecture with linkages to the planning process and specific references to the needs of the region.
