The continually increasing weight of automobiles with higher levels of comfort and safety led Audi to develop a vehicle body made from aluminium. These ambitious goals with regard to weight, comfort and safety required more than just a straight substitution of one material for another. Hence, a completely new body structure, the Audi Space Frame (ASF), was devised. The ASF is a structure, which connects aluminium node vacuum and die castings by laser welding, in the future by MIG welding with aluminium extrusions. This makes possible the design of automobile bodies with superior characteristics in stiffness, rigidity and energy absorption, while at the same time reducing weight by approximately 40 %, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. An ASF automobile offers a large enough reduction in fuel consumption even using primary aluminium exclusively, a positive energy balance within the first half of the automobile's life.
