In order to clean exhaust gas from automobiles, it is necessary to raise the exhaust gas temperature. Materials for exhaust manifolds especially require excellent thermal fatigue resistance. In the present study, a low Cr ferritic stainless steel which is less costly and has more excellent properties than the stainless steels in use, was developed. It was shown that the addition of Nb and Ti was remarkably effective for lengthening thermal fatigue lives because of its retarding effect of coarse M6C precipitation. Considering the balance of other properties, the 14Cr-0.3Nb-0.1Ti-0.5Mo ferritic stainless steel was developed as the optimum composition for heat resisting use in exhaust systems.
