Sintered nonwoven stainless steel (SS) fiber filter media can be designed to have different filtration properties with micron rating from 1 to 100 microns. The medium design concept is demonstrated by investigating the effect of medium basis weights and SS fiber sizes on filtration properties. The effect of basis weights on air permeability coefficient, pore size distribution and latex bead filtration efficiency was studied with medium made from fibers of the same size at 70 % porosity. When the medium basis weight increased from 139.7 to 860.5 g/m2, air permeability coefficient decreased from 14.5x10-12 to 8.3x10-12 m2, mean flow pore size decreased from 29.8 to 15.4 micron, and latex bead diameter at 98 % filtration efficiency (filter rating) decreased from 36.0 to 16.0 micron. The effect of fiber sizes on the filtration properties was studied with media having a basis weight of 590 g/m2 at 70 % porosity. When fiber size decreased, air permeability coefficient decreased from 33.4x10-12 to 0.3x10-12 m2, mean flow pore size decreased from 32.2 to 3.3 micron, and filter rating decreased from 39.0 to 1.6 micron. Different microfiltration requirements for hydraulic and other liquid filtration in transportation industry can be met by designing media from fibers of different sizes and by controlling medium basis weight and porosity.
