A University of Durham automotive wind tunnel has been developed to simulate transient cross-wind gusts at relative yaw angle of 30 degree. This is done using a stationary model to which a second transient gust is applied by means of a belt and spool assembly. Aerodynamic force measurements are conducted on a fully three dimensional generic 'hatchback' model by means of an array of pressure tappings. From these, transient pressure force and moment coefficients are measured and it is shown that the side and lift forces experienced in the transient situation exceed the steady state values at corresponding yaw angles by 10 to 20%.
