Maximum first cycle shakedown pressures are obtained numerically for mild steel domes fitted with a short cylindrical flange. Meridional shape is sought within elliptical profiles whilst the wall thickness distribution is described by the third order polynomial. The optimization method is based on Genetic Algorithms in which finite element re-analyses are employed.
