The composition of natural gas varies depending on the production area, and when used as an automobile fuel, the effect of such variations in composition on engine performance needs to be taken into consideration. As a result of tests using methane-based fuels with higher hydrocarbons and inert gases to study the effect on engine performance, the calorific value ratio for the unit volume of an air fuel mixture to methane, showed a very good correlation with not only output power but also MBT and knocking. Therefore, the calorific value ratio was found to be an effective parameter in evaluating test engine performance in various regions with different gas compositions. Standardization of nstural gas composition as an automobile fuel will be an important factor in optimizing engine output power, durability and exhaust emissions.
