Natural gas has attracted public attention for its high ability to reduce emissions as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. Commercial CNG vehicles have been developed, thus placing the focus on the immediate effect on the serious exhaust gas problem in urban areas. The result of optimizing the combustion chamber, intake port form, ignition system, fuel control system and exhaust system to convert 4.0 L diesel engine into CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine show sufficient low-emission level for practical use while securing output characteristics superior to base engines. This paper gives a general outline of their development and the current evaluation result in the market.
