This paper briefly presents design of a new pushboat concept for European major inland waterway Rhine-Main-Danube. By studying model testing and trial records of a number of existing pushboats, very low propulsion efficiency is noticed as a basic weakness of conventional pushboats' propulsion system. A new pushboat concept featuring improved manoeuver and better operating efficiency is proposed. The backbone of new design is an originally developed hybrid propulsion system with two main diesel engines driving three ducted propellers. In the complete absence of any rudders and appendages and with no stern tunnels, this new pushboat concept offers better propellers inflow conditions resulting in reduced level of propeller induced vibrations. By optimizing load distribution between a central and two steering propellers, an increased overall propulsive efficiency is achieved.
