In this research, using a simple fixed base simulator, optimum steering gear ratio was studied by the simulator tests on the basis of the hypothesis derived form the preview point analysis of the drivers. For the test conditions studied, with the steering gear ratio characteristics derived from our hypotheses: 1) Improvement in steering positioning control performance of drivers was observed. 2) Improvement in evasive maneuverability and lane change maneuverability was observed. 3) Driver's adaptability to the steering gear ratio characteristics was observed. 4) Steering torque characteristics which promote adaptability of the drivers to the steering gear ratio charateristics were observed. The above findings suggest that modifying steering gear ratio characteristics by Steer-by-Wire system could improve the performance of man-vehicle system for lateral motion control of the automobile. Additional reserach would be warranted to help confirm these findings.
