The access of the disabled to the driving of a vehicle necessarily goes trough the adequate adaptation of its controls. Among other aspects, the lack of regulations in Spain, and the need of some technical recommendations about this, have moved the Automobile Laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) to carry out the SEMAV Project in order to develop a simulator-evaluator that allows to obtain an objective conclusion of the adaptation that better meets the needs of each disability, besides covering other targets related to ergonomics and safety. The data acquisition and control system developed jointly with the Department of Systems Engineering, Computers and Control for this simulator is described. It has been implemented a microcontroller system that allows the independence between the acquisition and control system, the graphics representation and the data recording system, increasing the speed of data updating. The developed system collects all the data defining the abilities of maneuvering the car by disabled drivers, such as strength, movements and dashboard controls.
