Marine fuels - today's quality, tomorrow's availability
An overview of several current marine fuel quality issues is presented from the perspective of a major bunker fuel supplier. The historical background to today's quality issues and the underlying purposes of fuel specifications are discussed. Trends in fuel quality are examined, and the drivers for changes in future fuel quality are reviewed. The drivers include: revision of the international standard ISO 8217; market pressures; and proposed legislation aimed at reducing air pollution from shipping. The implications of these drivers on future supply are discussed. Finally, the authors' experience of a serious and topical fuel quality issue - contamination of fuels with polypropylene - is presented. (Contributions and author's replies in Vol. 7, p 1779-1780)
