A new approach for the determination of quiescent periods in ship motion utilising the wavelet method is described in this paper, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the technique. The wavelet method is introduced, with a simple case being used to prove that wavelets can be used to progress sea waves in time, and also be used as a signal processing tool. The use of existing methods and the problems encountered in the prediction of quiescent periods of ship motions are als discussed.
