This paper describes measuring devices developed by the authors and others for clearly determining the lubricating condition at the small end bearing of the connecting rod of an automobile engine by measuring the friction force. Results from using those measuring devices clearly indicate that the lubricating condition of the small end bearing is characterized by non-fluid lubrication having two peaks of friction force per cycle. It has also been demonstrated by means of experiments that the lubricating condition can be shifted to fluid lubrication by supplying an adequate amount of lubricating oil, and that the major cause of the non-fluid lubrication is an insufficient supply of oil. Moreover, the influence of small end friction force on the piston pin boss bearing lubrication has been deduced from the relationship between the friction force at the small end bearing and the piston pin rotations by measuring those motions with a unique method developed by the authors.
