Via chemical methods like glycolysis, polyurethane production scrap or used parts can be transformed into chemical raw materials which can be used for the production of other polyurethane articles. This means for polyurethanes, in contrast to thermoplastics, simplified logistics and simplified reprocessing, because strict generic purity is unnecessary. Polyurethanes, as an engineering plastics family, are especially appropriate for automotive interiors, because their glycolysates exhibit both miscibility and cross-compatibility. The new 5 Series BMW is the first large series application of glycolysates in the automotive area. This proves that polyurethanes and composites from polyurethanes are recyclable and that glycolysis enables the economic reuse of polyurethanes. The realisation of this concept was honoured and acknowledged by an SPE Award - first prize for body interior equipment.
