Vessels with ungrounded electrical systems monitor the isolation with a USCG-specified ground detector. The required detector is suitable for mostgrounding cases but is deficient with some reactive faults and faults nota phase potential. In these instances, the detector provides confusing indications and may seriously misrepresent the isolation integrity. In this paper detector performance is examined in detail using both analytic and computer models. The advantages and limitations of the detector are explored while sample ground-fault cases are reviewed. Finally, a test procedure is proposed which supplements the detector and confirms that the required isolation is present.
