Arias Research Associates (ARA) has been developing a new, extremely high-powered electric vehicle (EV) battery called the Sealed Bipolar Lead-Acid (SBLA). The technology was originally demonstrated at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the 'Star Wars' program. After five years of development, the battery is through the laboratory stage and independent laboratory testing, and full-size EV batteries are being fabricated with sponsorship from the Exide Corporation. Compared to conventional lead-acid technology, the laboratory results and vehicle test simulations demonstrate dramatic advances in power, energy, and life, which rival the performance of 'advanced' battery technologies. The importance of a low-cost, high-power battery to the successful commercialization of EVs is quantified and discussed.
