Many kinds of materials are used for automotive parts corresponding to the function and performance requirement of each part. Among them, thermoplastics have been widely employed thanks to their competitive characteristics: light weight; high corrosion resistance; high design flexibility; processability for parts integration; high productivity and above all, a very wide range of material variation. Average weight percentage number of plastics employed for a Japanese passenger car is about 8, and about 30 % in terms of volume. Consequently plastics have become indispensable materials along with steel. Here presented are several thermoplastic materials and their applications for automotive parts, centering around polypropylene which share one-third of Japanese automotive thermoplastics demand, from the view point of material developing technology trend, recycling subject and weight reduction.
