This paper presents the new type of a Tuned Liquid Dampfer (TLD) which utilizes water in a U-shaped tank as a mass of dynamic damper. The authors carried out model tests and vibration experiments in ship structures and in building structures. The effectiveness of a mechanism of the TLD developed by authors was proved good in a model test, as designed. A natural frequency of the damper was controlled by changing air pressure in the tank. The experiments in the building as well as in the ship revealed tha tthe reduction in structural vibration by the TLD was verified. The mechanism of the TLD with a semi-active control system was proved effective in simulation tests, as expected. From the result of an experiment onboard the ship, it has became obvious that the semi-active control system was applicable to practical use.
