Representative system modelling techniques and their capabilities to support manufactruing strategy evaluation have been investigated and reviewed by using a rigorous experimental programme to apply associated computer tools at a collaborating automotive component manufacturing company. The results give new knowledge about modelling techniques in this role and show that none fully support the activity of manufacturing strategy evaluation in its totality. However, many useful pointers to the future development of such a tool have been determined.
