A high performance universal motor drive position fuzzy controller is proposed. To obtain the necessary fuzzy rules only experimental knowledge on motor drive dynamics is considered. The ability to perform a robust position control, without knowing any of the motor parameters or operating conditions, makes this controller suitable to control almost any type of motor, from DC to Synchronous. The 'elastic' structure adopted leads to low implementation effort and to the possibility of using a slow processing unit. The 'elastic' controller was design and implemented to eliminate the response steady state error and the usually limited boundaries in the input reference. Since this 'elastic' controller regulates the 'gain' of the fuzzy controller, the system remains stable for all operating conditions and achieves fewer energy losses. In this paper, results are presented using a DC motor.
