This paper describes the use of high-C welding electrodes for rail welding, which provides rail weld metal with improved wear resistance and prevents liquation cracking at rail HAZ, which is often found under the use of conventional low C-low alloy electrodes. Studies have been made on how to manufacture electrodes with carbon up to 1 % and how to avoid solidification cracking likely to occur in high-C weld metal. The results are as follows: The high-C electrodes were successfully manufactured. The welding procedure specific to the high-C welding was accomplished resulting in sound welds with high wear resistance. This new welding procedure has already been applied for butt welding of rails in Japan and is now under study on repair welding of damaged running surfaces of rails, like engine burns.
