During the past decade, the use of electrical and electromechanical systems in cars has increased dramatically. With the proliferation of electronic ignition and transmissions, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, air bags and other electrical devices, demand for sensors and solenoids is rising sharply. Sensors are required in such systems to measure variables such as speed, position, temperature or fluid level. Solenoids are needed to activate mechanical devices such as anti-skid brakes, exhaust gas recovery valves, fast idling valves, fuel injectors and air conditioning compressors. This paper highlights recent developments in thermoplastic materials mold design and molding techniques for the production of encapsulated automotive solenoids and sensors that can well withstand the thermal and chemical conditions prevailing in the automotive operating environment.
