Advances in computer-aided design technology, experimental modal analysis, advances in design optimization theory, and new computer graphics and animation technology have provided us with the necessary tools to develop an integrated approach to the simultaneous optimal design of body and engine mounts. Results of our studies over the past few years on both engine and body mounts have been incorporated into formulation of a completely new and analytically-based approach to a vehicle NVH analysis and design. This new technology provides an analytical-based objective evaluation of the vehicle mount parameter design, rather than today's subjective evaluation. This new design approach is based on on-line digital FFT analysis of a vehicle which provides modal characteristics of the vehicle. This information is used as inputs to two optimization algorithms which interactively determine the optimal design parameters for the vehicle body and engine mounts. Results of this simultaneous optimal parameter design is presented in the form of a vehicle animation. This paper introduces the concept, provides some of the analytical details, and compares the mount parameter designs for different vehicles based on this approach to the conventional design techniques.
