Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) has been identified as a potential route for the fabrication of semi-structural automotive components. However, there is a trade-off between the quality of the surface finish and the cycle time in the tool. By monitoring the moulding cycle it is possible to determine the characteristics of the constituent materials to achieve both of these requirements. This can be accomplished by controlling the exotherm temperatures in the moulding, through careful selection of the base resin and the inclusion of additives, such as low profile agents and particulate fillers, which also control the shrinkage in the moulding. Control of the exotherm temperaures can be further assisted by selecting an initiation system based upon a mixed catalyst system, with additions of inhibitor to produce longer wet-out time at the periphery of the tool.
